Stantec has announced that Roy Hummell and Linda Mortensen have joined a growing Pacific Northwest environmental team in the Seattle area.
Collectively, they have more than 50 years of experience performing environmental assessments, remediation and restorations.
They are teaming to implement a national sediment assessment and remediation program. Hummell joins Stantec as a principal scientist and Mortensen as a senior scientist.
“Bringing Roy and Linda to Stantec is an exciting development,” said Jim Grasty, Stantec’s Regional Business Leader for Environmental Services in the US West. “They have worked together for many years and their background and expertise complement our business goals as we grow and diversify our team in the Pacific Northwest. Developing a sediment assessment and remediation program will greatly enhance what Stantec can offer our clients.”
With more than 20 years of experience in the assessment and management of hazardous substances, Hummell has successfully led many large, complex investigations. His technical skills and testimony experience include chemometrics, biometry, analytical chemistry, human health/ecological risk analyses, wildlife biology/toxicology, natural resource damage assessment, environmental impact statements, endangered species assessments and pollutant transport modeling. He has provided environmental solutions to the pulp and paper industry, chemical manufacturing industry, mining and smelting industry, petrochemical companies, municipalities, state health and regulatory agencies, the U.S. EPA, and the U.S. Department of Defense. Recent efforts have included representation of Fortune 500 companies on the Fox River, Passaic River and Portland Harbor Superfund sediment remediation projects. Hummell is currently Stantec’s project manager for the Holden Mine Remediation, the largest remediation that has occurred on Forest Service Land.
Mortensen’s expertise is in aquatic toxicology and sediment investigations. She started her career under contract for the EPA participating in several field sampling events and assessment team meetings at Region 1 Superfund sites. Her subsequent consulting experience has been spread nationally and has included field sampling, bioassay implementation and ecological risk assessments at multiple scales (screening, baseline and regional) for sites that have included Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard, CA; Port of Valdez, AK; and Lower Fox River, WI. Recently she led one of the largest sampling investigations of PCBs and dioxins in shellfish in the Pacific Northwest. Currently, Mortensen is Stantec’s ecological services leader of the Holden Mine Remediation.
Hummell received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nevada, Reno. He is a Newcastle, WA, resident. Mortensen received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Vermont and her master’s degree from Western Washington University. She is a Seattle, WA, resident.
