Driving Mobile with AT&T and ZTE Mobley

For the past couple of weeks, I have been test driving the ZTE Mobley mobile wireless hotspot from AT&T.  It has proved to provide super convenient to have a mobile internet hotspot that will provide service to up to 5 devices at a time.

Installation of the ZTE Mobley was surprisingly simple, easy - and extremely quick.  I just plugged the Mobley into the OBD-II port under the dash in my car and it powered up fast.  Once a device is connected with the Mobley using the security passcode, it will automatically reconnect each time it comes within the Mobley's range.

8 Ways Smartphones Assist Your Sales Team

smartphones assistIn the current market, it’s now or never when it comes to closing a deal. If the prospects don’t buy when an irresistible offer is in front of them, chances are they’ll take their business elsewhere. But, with a smartphone at their disposal, your sales team can go the extra mile to eliminate any reservations and earn clients' business.

Here are just a few ways smartphones are boosting conversion rates in the world of sales:

Email Management

Sales representatives' email inboxes can quickly become inundated when out in the field pitching to prospects. However, having access to a smartphone makes it easy to quickly respond to basic inquiries, send out email blasts and reach out to customers with any questions, all while being away from their desks. And, if you invest in a smartphone with a strong battery life like the HTC One M9, your reps won’t be forced to linger around the nearest outlet to charge their phones.

Remote File Access

Now, there is no need to spend hours at the office digging through client files in search of historical sales data. If the files are held in the cloud, your team can access them directly from their smartphones and gather all the needed information for meetings while on the go. And, you can rest assured the information is up to date if your accounting system uses real-time reporting.

Contact Information

Should the prospect decide to check out your offerings and make a purchasing decision at a later date, you want to have a way to follow up with him or her. Instead of stuffing a business card in your wallet that can easily be misplaced or forgotten, you can train your sales reps to lock the prospect's information into their smartphones and set a calendar reminder to initiate contact.

File Swapping

If you or someone on your team needs to place an important account in the hands of a colleague, Dropbox is a great file-swapping app that lets you send large client files, presentations and any other documentation they’ll need to make the meeting a success.

Remote Closing

Long gone are the days when a client would come into the office, sign on the dotted line and remit payment. Through smartphone apps such as eFax and Square that allow the transmission of files and mobile payment processing, sales representatives are able to close the deal outside of the office, whether it’s at the local coffee shop, a fine dining establishment or the client’s office.

Product Pocket Guides

While seasoned salesmen typically have their product pitch perfected, it doesn’t hurt to use a smartphone to show the prospect how your product or service works. Smartphones are a great way to show portfolios, product designs, blueprints, testimonials and any other information you have.

GPS

Sales representatives no longer have to rely on physical maps or GPS devices to navigate unfamiliar territory. Google Maps shows you where to go and even provides real-time traffic updates and alternative routes, which can help when planning out your daily route.

Travel Expense Reporting

If your sales representatives are incurring expenses while on the road, it can be difficult to organize and process handwritten records of expenses and accompanying receipts. Instead, encourage your sales team to download the Concur app and use it to record their expenses. And, since it easily integrates with most major accounting systems, your accounting process will be much more efficient.

Apple Announces New Environmental Initiatives in China

apple logoApple recently announced an expansion of its renewable energy and environmental protection initiatives in China, including a new multi-year project with World Wildlife Fund to significantly increase responsibly managed forests across China. The new forestland program aims to protect as much as 1 million acres of responsibly managed working forests which provide fiber for pulp, paper and wood products.

Apple’s goal is to achieve a net-zero impact on the world’s supply of sustainable virgin fiber and power all its operations worldwide on 100 percent renewable energy.

“Forests, like energy, can be renewable resources,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environmental Initiatives. “We believe we can run on naturally renewable resources and ensure that we protect—and create—as much sustainable working forest as needed to produce the virgin paper in our product packaging. This is an important step toward that goal and our commitment to leave the world better than we found it.”

Apple also announced its intent to expand its industry-leading renewable energy projects to manufacturing facilities in China.

“We’ve set an example by greening our data centers, retail stores and corporate offices, and we’re ready to start leading the way toward reducing carbon emissions from manufacturing,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “This won’t happen overnight—in fact it will take years—but it’s important work that has to happen, and Apple is in a unique position to take the initiative toward this ambitious goal. It is a responsibility we accept. We are excited to work with leaders in our supply chain who want to be on the cutting edge of China’s green transformation.”

Today’s announcements come three weeks after Apple launched its first major solar project in China. Solar installations in Sichuan Province will generate far more energy than needed to power all of Apple’s corporate offices and retail stores in China.

Apple is partnering with Leshan Electric Power Co., Sichuan Development Holding Co., Ltd, Tianjin Tsinlien Investment Holding Co., Ltd, Tianjin Zhonghuan Semiconductor Co., Ltd, and SunPower Corporation on the project encompassing two 20-megawatt solar farms. Together the project will generate up to 80 million kilowatt hours per year of clean energy, enough to power the equivalent of 61,000 Chinese homes.  That’s clean energy added to the grid that would otherwise not be there.

The solar projects were carefully designed to minimize their ecological impact and protect the grasslands that support the yak population, which is also important to the local economy. Today 87 percent of Apple’s global operations run on renewable energy, and the Sichuan Province solar project will bring Apple even closer to its commitment to reach 100 percent.

“Apple’s support for this project and its environmental leadership show that protecting forests is not just good for society but important for business,” said Lo Sze Ping, Chief Executive Officer for WWF China. “This collaboration between our two organizations will seek to reduce China’s ecological footprint by helping produce more wood from responsibly managed forests within its own borders. Doing so is essential to China, the world’s biggest timber importer. Our hope is this will catalyze a new model of corporate leadership in promoting sustainable forest management and using paper resources more efficiently and responsibly around the world.”

New Desktop Application Has Potential to Increase Asteroid Detection, Now Available to Public

Planetary ResourcesA software application based on an algorithm created by a NASA challenge has the potential to increase the number of new asteroid discoveries by amateur astronomers.

Analysis of images taken of our solar system’s main belt asteroids between Mars and Jupiter using the algorithm showed a 15 percent increase in positive identification of new asteroids.

During a panel Sunday at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, NASA representatives discussed how citizen scientists have made a difference in asteroid hunting. They also announced the release of a desktop software application developed by NASA in partnership with Planetary Resources, Inc., of Redmond, Washington. The application is based on an Asteroid Data Hunter-derived algorithm that analyzes images for potential asteroids. It’s a tool that can be used by amateur astronomers and citizen scientists.

The Asteroid Data Hunter challenge was part of NASA’s Asteroid Grand Challenge. The data hunter contest series, which was conducted in partnership with Planetary Resources under a Space Act Agreement, was announced at the 2014 South by Southwest Festival and concluded in December. The series offered a total of $55,000 in awards for participants to develop significantly improved algorithms to identify asteroids in images captured by ground-based telescopes. The winning solutions of each piece of the contest combined to create an application using the best algorithm that increased the detection sensitivity, minimized the number of false positives, ignored imperfections in the data, and ran effectively on all computer systems.

“The Asteroid Grand Challenge is seeking non-traditional partnerships to bring the citizen science and space enthusiast community into NASA’s work,” said Jason Kessler, program executive for NASA’s Asteroid Grand Challenge. “The Asteroid Data Hunter challenge has been successful beyond our hopes, creating something that makes a tangible difference to asteroid hunting astronomers and highlights the possibility for more people to play a role in protecting our planet.”

The data hunter challenge incorporated data provided by the Minor Planet Center (MPC), at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and images provided by the Catalina Sky Survey, an astronomical survey project run by the University of Arizona, Tucson, and focused on the discovery and study of near-Earth asteroids and comets.

“We applaud all the participants in the Asteroid Data Hunter challenge. We are extremely encouraged by the algorithm created and it’s already making a difference. This increase in knowledge will help assess more quickly which asteroids are potential threats, human destinations or resource rich,” said Chris Lewicki, president and chief engineer at Planetary Resources. “It has been exciting for our team to work with NASA on this project, and we also look forward to future space-based systems leveraging these results.”

Astronomers find asteroids by taking images of the same place in the sky and looking for star-like objects that move between frames, an approach that has been used since before Pluto was discovered in 1930. With more telescopes scanning the sky, the ever-increasing volume of data makes it impossible for astronomers to verify each detection by hand. This new algorithm gives astronomers the ability to use computers to autonomously and rapidly check the images and determine which objects are suitable for follow up, which leads to finding more asteroids than previously possible.

“The beauty of such archives is that the data doesn't grow stale, and with novel approaches, techniques and algorithms, they can be harvested for new information. The participants of the Asteroid Data Hunter challenge did just that, probing observations of the night sky for new asteroids that might have slipped through the software cracks the first time the images were analyzed,” said Jose Luis Galache of the MPC. “Moreover, this software can now be used to analyze new images and is available to any observer who wants to use it. The Minor Planet Center applauds these efforts to provide superior tools to all, and looks forward to receiving new asteroid observations generated with them.”

The desktop software application is free and can be used on any basic desktop or laptop computer. Amateur astronomers may take images from their telescopes and analyze them with the application. The application will tell the user whether a matching asteroid record exists and offer a way to report new findings to the Minor Planet Center, which then confirms and archives new discoveries.

Through NASA's asteroid initiative, the agency seeks to enhance its ongoing work in the identification and characterization of near-Earth objects for further scientific investigation. This work includes locating potentially hazardous asteroids and identifying those viable for redirection to a stable lunar orbit for future exploration by astronauts using NASA’s Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft. The Asteroid Grand Challenge, one part of the asteroid initiative, expands the agency's efforts beyond traditional boundaries and encourages partnerships and collaboration with a variety of organizations.

The algorithm contests were managed and executed by NASA's Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation (CoECI). CoECI was established at the request of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to advance NASA’s open innovation efforts and extend that expertise to other federal agencies. CoECI uses the NASA Tournament Lab (NTL) for its advanced algorithmic and software development contests. Through its contract with the Crowd Innovation Lab at Harvard University, NTL uses Appirio’s Crowdsourcing platform powered by Topcoder to enable a community of more than 750,000 designers, developers and data scientists to create the most innovative, efficient and optimized solutions for specific, real-world challenges faced by NASA. Data storage of the Catalina Sky Survey data was provided by Amazon Web Services.

The Lean IT Association Launches with Mission to Set a Global Standard for Lean IT Education and Certification

Lean IT Association logoThe Lean IT Association - a consortium of global leaders in the IT Training and Certification Industry -  today announced its formation and revealed its newly developed Lean IT Certification Scheme. The Certification Scheme sets out an important reference for professionals in several degrees of knowledge and competence.

The Lean IT Association (LITA) is led by a Board comprised of Senior Directors of its founding members, including Nick Houlton (APMG), Bernd Taselaar (EXIN), Byron Nicolaides (PEOPLECERT), David Ratcliffe (Pink Elephant), Maurice Boon (Quint) and Sukhbir Jasuja (ITpreneurs). According the Association’s Manifesto, the Consortium was founded to set a global standard for Lean IT education and certification.

Lean is about making the organization more efficient and to effectively respond to external demand. Incremental and radical change methods such as Agile Scrum can be used to transition the organization to Lean principles in production and management. IT Service Management can get a huge benefit out of Lean IT, by removing waste and optimizing the value of the IT services. Nick Houlton,  Chief Operating Officer at APMG states: “Lean principles have been used in a variety of industries for some years now. The IT industry has embraced these principles using the term “Lean IT”, but while there have been some fragmented initiatives for education & certification in Lean IT, there is no universally accepted program or thought leadership. The Lean IT Association is aiming to remedy that”.

The Lean IT Certification Scheme consists of 4 distinct certifications for various levels. Starting at an entry level with Lean IT Foundation and moving into Lean IT Kaizen Lead, climbing further up the ladder to Lean IT Leader or Coach. Each level introduces more knowledge and skills, eventually leading up to competences that enable a professional to support corporate introduction or further development of Lean IT initiatives.

Training providers can apply for accreditation by one of the Exam Institutes liaised to LITA,  through the Lean IT Association website. The quality of their training program, materials and trainers will be assessed against and accredited according to LITA standards.

About the Lean IT Association
Lean IT Association (LITA) is a non-profit organization founded by three Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) - ITpreneurs, Pink Elephant, Quint and three Examination Institutes (EIs) - APMG, EXIN, PEOPLECERT International Ltd.
To realize its broader purpose LITA aims to provide:

●an industry-standard set of Lean IT reference materials and other resources for practitioner organizations to use;
●a clear understanding of the value and positioning of Lean IT relative to other bodies of knowledge, frameworks and standards;
●a certification scheme aimed at practitioner organizations looking to adopt Lean IT principles in the IT Service development and operations department as well as professionals that want to be certified in Lean IT on various levels.

Increase Your Bottom Line by Improving Customers' Shopping Experiences

Bellevue-based Outerwall will showcase its services and products and its suite of kiosks this week in booth #36047 at CES 2015 in Las Vegas, a global trade show known for launching products and devices many consumers can only dream of owning.

Outerwall's mainstay brands, Coinstar and Redbox, help consumers maximize their budgets by transforming spare change into cash or no-fee eCertificates and offering the best value for new release movie entertainment. And for the first time ever, the company will feature its entire family of automated kiosks together at CES, including the newest offerings:

  • ecoATM – available throughout the U.S., ecoATM kiosks pay cash instantly for used cell phones, tablets and MP3 players;

  • Coinstar Exchange – with hundreds of kiosks in the U.S., Coinstar Exchange kiosks offer instant cash for unused gift cards; and

  • SAMPLEit – currently in pilot stage and available in select markets across the U.S., SAMPLEit kiosks are an easy and affordable way to discover and try new products from leading brands, and save money on full-size versions with valuable coupons included with each purchase.

"Outerwall will be presenting our vision for the future of smart shopping based on our core capabilities and assets," said J. Scott Di Valerio, CEO of Outerwall. "We'll also continue demonstrating our commitment to simplicity, convenience and value by showcasing our newest kiosk solutions: ecoATM, Coinstar Exchange and SAMPLEit."

As consumers continue looking for ways to save money and get the best value for their dollars, they're also looking to retailers to help them find ways to shop more effectively.

The brick and mortar store, once the "holy grail" for a point of sale, now has an opportunity to be reinvented as the lines between digital and physical retail become blurred. Retailers can transform the shopping experience for their customers – from a chore to an interactive, personalized experience in the digital age.

"Smartphones forever changed how connected consumers are all of the time," said Leslie Hand, vice president for retail insights at IDC. "Technology innovations in the retail industry will enable previously unprecedented levels of personalized interaction with customers, who will continue integrating mobility into the fabric of their lives."

Smart shopping is the key to retailers' success

At CES 2015, Outerwall will demonstrate unique potential smart shopping concepts by illustrating a next-generation, in-store retail shopping experience that leverages the latest mobile technologies. In the Outerwall booth, conference attendees can view three demos of shopping scenarios where retailers can connect directly with consumers during their consideration journey.

Through its prevalent network of more than 65,000 kiosks, the company understands how consumers' relationships with retailers are changing amidst the convergence of online and physical retail. And with 91 percent of the U.S. population living within five miles of an Outerwall kiosk, the company is positioned to help retailers orchestrate innovative ways of interacting with loyal customers in addition to engaging new consumers.

Outerwall is creating and evaluating real world concepts of innovative consumer shopping experiences that could change the way people interact with the stores they frequent and the brands they love. Visit Outerwall in booth #36047 at CES this week to learn more.
